NLP Model of Communication

We experience the world (“External Events”) through our five senses:

  • Visual – Sight
  • Auditory – Sound
  • Kinaesthetic – Touch
  • Olfactory – Smell
  • Gustatory – Taste

While your unconscious mind is able to absorb and store everything that is happening around us, estimated at a whopping 2,000,000 bits per second of information, your conscious mind can only handle about 7±2 “chunks,” or roughly 126 bits per second

In order for us to have a conscious experience of the world – what we call an “Internal Representation” in NLP – our unconscious mind has to “filter” the 2,000,000 bits of information down to 126 manageable bits, each second. It filters the information in three ways:

  • Deletions
  • Distortions
  • Generalisations

And it does this based on the following filters that run deep inside our minds:

  • Your environment (Time, Space, Matter and Energy)
  • Language
  • Memories
  • Decisions
  • Meta-Programs
  • Attitudes
  • Beliefs
  • Values

Many of these filters are largely or entirely unconscious and we use the tools of NLP to change them rapidly and easily.

What we are left with is our Internal Representation or our conscious experience. Couple that together with your Physiology and that gives you your current state.

All of our behaviour and results are based on our State, so NLP gives you the tools to change your Internal Representation and State quickly at the unconscious level to achieve the results you want in life.
